The three major U.S. stock averages rallied in the last two sessions of the week as inflation fears eased from prior hand wringing, but it wasn’t enough to offset the drop from earlier in the week. On Friday, the Nasdaq rose 2.3%, the S&P 500 was up 1.5%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average moved up 1.1%. For the week, the Nasdaq fell 2.3%, the S&P dropped 1.4%, and the Dow slipped 1.1%.

Early in the week, commodities grabbed the headlines after a ransomware attack shut the Colonial Pipeline, which is the largest gasoline pipeline in the U.S. The cyber breach and Middle East problems have sent prices at the pump above $3 per gallon, the highest since October 2014, amid shortages and panic buying across the southeastern United States. Its reopening has helped to relieve pressure on outages, but the speed at with the fuel flows (only at 3-5 MPH) may not bring gas to many pumps on the East coast until the end of May.

AT&T just announced that it will combine its Warner Media division — the home of HBO and CNN, built from its $85 billion takeover of Time Warner in 2016 — with Discovery, which runs channels like HGTV and the Food Network. The note is a sign that the aggressive deal making that transformed AT&T into a debt-heavy conglomerate hasn’t worked like they thought it would.

The CDC surprised the world when they made the decision to allow fully vaccinated Americans to forego masks in most settings on its own, and also didn’t tell the White House, The NYT.com reports. Amid confusion over how to apply the new guidance, the CDC’s director, Dr. Rochelle Wallensky, defended the change and asked people to be “honest.”

Cryptocurrency’s rise is reflected in the latest U.S. tax documents (Taxes were due May 17, in case you forgot). This year, a virtual currency question tops Form 1040, the individual income tax return form, right after the personal identifying information. The I.R.S. wants to know: “At any time during 2020, did you receive, sell, send, exchange, or otherwise acquire any financial interest in any virtual currency?”
