With a single word, your doctor has just confirmed your worst fears – “Cancer.” For many people, receiving a cancer diagnosis can be life-altering -- but it doesn't have to be something you go through alone.

That’s why organizations like the Cancer Support Community Central Ohio have stepped up to provide support and to guide people through an often-difficult treatment schedule.

“Our programs offer psychosocial support, educational resources, and practical guidance, helping to ease the burdens of those affected by cancer and fostering a sense of community and hope, no matter where someone is in their cancer journey,” shared Melissa Lisk, Senior Marketing Manager for the Cancer Support Community Central Ohio. “Everything is provided at no cost to ensure that we do not increase the financial burden of those already coping with life-threatening issues. No one should ever have to choose between taking care of cancer and taking care of themselves.”

It's a noble mission that First Merchants Bank has been proud to support and partner on for nearly a decade.

“We began serving as their bank in about 2014,” shared Kevin Koogler, Banking Center Manager with First Merchants Bank. “We manage their accounts, run financial wellness courses for them, provide volunteers, offer spaces for meetings and events, and sponsor one of their major fundraisers – among other things. We’re so honored to be a part of helping this amazing organization.”

For Kevin, working with the Cancer Support Community Central Ohio holds deep meaning, as he, too, is a cancer survivor.

“I was diagnosed when I was 19,” he shared. “Just hearing the word ‘cancer’ is gut-wrenching – even if it’s just a small skin cancer or melanoma spot – you freak out, you lose all perspective. I’m in remission now, but others in my family have gone through the same struggle – so the work this organization is doing is very near and dear to my heart.”

Whether a client needs support groups, meal and cooking support, healthy lifestyle plans and coaching, or more, they can get it at the Cancer Support Community – and all in a way designed to build relationships and foster community.

“Community is so important to what we do,” said Melissa. “The psychosocial and emotional side of cancer is as important as the cancer treatment itself.”

In fact, the Cancer Support Community Central Ohio is the only organization in the nation with a research institute dedicated to the emotional and psychological aspects of cancer care.

And it truly is vital work, Kevin explained – especially when four out of 10 Ohio residents will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetime, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

“Knowing what happens to an individual when they are given that diagnosis, I can sympathize and empathize with what they’re doing – it’s work and support that’s sorely needed,” Kevin said.

First Merchants Bank also works with the Cancer Support Community Central Ohio to provide financial wellness sessions, courses, and counseling.

“They are very personable and caring individuals,” Kevin said. “They just give unprecedented care to each person that walks through that door, and that aligns perfectly with First Merchants’ goal of being attentive to the needs of our community. We want people to succeed and grow – and, especially when you’re dealing with something as big as cancer, you need people in your community you can lean on to support you. The Cancer Support Community Central Ohio is that rock for people.”
